– I was so fortunate to travel with Kulturstudier to Nepal in the spring of 2024. People often ask me what the best part of the trip was.
It has been incredibly difficult for me to put into words, and especially to choose a single event.
It remains a comprehensive experience, a unique adventure, which I believe one only encounters by studying in another country.

Kulturstudier has Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian students – in addition to local scholarship recipients. One lives together with the others, studies together, and travels together:
– Even though the study was very exciting, I also remember this semester as a half-year where I got to experience all that Nepal has to offer in terms of festivals, inspiring people, and delicious food; and also being able to share these experiences with many other young people from Scandinavia.
Just like at a folk high school, one forms incredibly close relationships very quickly, and that's why, after my semester in Nepal, I've had to travel all around Norway to meet all my new friends.

– In addition, my adventures in Nepal have given me the opportunity to meet the local people and have provided me with a deeper understanding of Nepalese culture, language, and religion.
In this enumeration of how fantastic Nepal is, the exciting natural experiences, both in the jungle and in the mountains, must also be mentioned. It was indeed in nature that I had some of the greatest moments.

Pokhara is an ideal place to live for those who love hiking. The Himalayan mountain range is also quite different from the Norwegian mountains, so even an experienced hiker will find a challenge to tackle here. You are guaranteed to have an experience you will remember for the rest of your life:
– Together with others from the study, I threw myself into something that truly is a “must do” when it comes to Nepal. We decided to climb a mountain. With help from local guides, we trekked for five days up to an altitude of 4500 meters.
On our way up, we passed through small mountain villages with little stone houses and hospitable people.
It's amazing to experience how nature and the surroundings gradually change as one moves upwards. We stayed overnight in small cabins and ate the traditional dal bhat, while in the evening we warmed ourselves around the fire.

– Out of fear of altitude sickness, we took our time and took good care of each other, especially by ensuring plenty of snacks. I was so grateful to hike with a group of people I knew well. Not only because we supported and motivated each other, but also because it's amazing to share such beautiful experiences with your friends.
The most magical moment was when we got up in the middle of the night on the last day and wandered in the dark to watch the sun rise over the mountainsides in the Himalayas, while we ate muesli bars and drank hot cocoa to keep our fingers warm.
This is just one of many experiences in Nepal that gave me the courage to continue traveling around – both with others from the study on safari and river rafting trips and later alone up in the mountains.
