Akwaaba: Welcome to Cape Coast!
Our manager Michael welcomes you to his beloved Cape Coast! Keep reading to learn what you can expect from this lovely coastal city.

Cape Coast lies 143 kilometers west of Accra, the Capital of Ghana. With a population below 200.000, it is not a big city and luckily easy for me to move around as my work involves a lot of arranging and organizing.
The inhabitants of Cape Coast are mostly fisherfolks with the men going to sea and the women involved in fish mongering.

There is also a vibrant formal sector, since Cape Coast as the regional capital houses the regional coordinating council and is host to a lot of popular educational institutions.
The first formal elementary school in Ghana was established in Cape Coast. As a country practising multiparty democracy, independent judicial system, freedom of speech and free press, Ghana has offered Kulturstudier a peaceful city in Africa to run one of their academic programs.

With the backdrop of such safe environment, I welcome you to embark on this great academic and social adventure with Kulturstudier.
The semester is filled with so much learning and joy; and you also get the chance to enjoy the best Ghanaian cuisine!

Red Red is beans (black eyed peas) stew served with fried ripe plantain. It has been the favourite of most past students.
Palava sauce with yam and peanut soup with rice balls are also historically very popular amongst students.

Sites and attractions to behold include the Cape Coast Castle, which is a World Heritage Site and one of the biggest attractions in the city.
The castle was built as a defence fortress as well as a holding place for enslaved people prior to embarking on the trip to America. Seeing the castle is both humbling and emotional and the learning experience is incredible.

The Kakum National Park, one of the most diverse and best-preserved national parks in Africa is located about 45 minutes north of Cape Coast.
It’s a captivating experience to go on the canopy walk to view the tropical rainforest from above, to spend a night in the tree house and hike at dawn with rangers to see a variety of animals and plants.

For leisure, there are many gorgeous palm front beaches and resorts located in and around Cape Coast.
The Brenu Beach, acclaimed as one of the most beautiful beaches in Ghana is our study centre where we take students twice a week to have lunch and spend the afternoon and get a nice tan to show off at home.
Oasis Beach Resort, just a few minutes’ walk from the Cape Coast Castle, is the favourite hang out of most students. It offers a good spot for admiring the beautiful ocean over delicious meals.

When I’m going out to eat myself, Kokodo Restaurant and Guest House opposite Mfantsipim School Park is my favorite spot. The ambience is very cosy, with a garden and the food very delicious.
If you are not going out to eat in the evening, you can make your orders for delivery from FKW Kitchen, whose menu will be posted in the conference room at the students’ hostel.
Cape Coast and Ghana will surely get under your skin, and we are really looking forward to meeting the students each semester and saying a big AKWAABA (WELCOME) to you all!
