San Isidro seen through local eyes
Our manager Raquel lets you in on the secrets of the charming town San Isidro.

Located in a valley in the south of Costa Rica, surrounded by mountains and refreshed by rivers.
San Isidro is known for its stunning natural surroundings, offering a chance to explore a modest and authentic Costa Rican lifestyle.

This city was funded in the year 1931, and has a population of 50,000. Most people here know each other, and it is very likely that someone you have never met will say hello to you as if they know you on you way to school.
People in San Isidro tend to be warm and welcoming. Agriculture is still one of the main activities, so here it is normal to have a connection to the land. Backyards usually have some fruit trees and medicinal herbs.

San Isidro is viewed as a good place to live for Costa Ricans. It has become a home for some foreigners as well, that found this a great place to live once they have retired, mostly for the easy access to services and proximity to nature.
Not everyone you meet will speak english, since the city is not very touristy. This also means that the cost of living is lower comparing to other Costa Rican regions.

Another positive aspect is the easy access to to other parts of Costa Rica. San Isidro is a great base for exploring nearby attractionsl
Here are some of my personal favorites:
Nauyaca Waterfalls
Just a 30 minute drive from San Isidro, these majestic waterfalls are a must-visit. You can hike, ride a horse, or take a 4x4 tour to reach them, and this is a perfect spot for swimming.

Central park
The heart of the town, surrounded by small shops, restaurants, and the beautiful Cathedral of San Isidro.
Cerro Chirripó
Costa Rica’s highest peak is located nearby and it is the most recognized hike in the country. The trek to the summit is challenging but rewarding, with stunning views of both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans on clear days. The beautiful village of San Gerardo de Rivas is only 35 min away.

La Feria (farmer’s market)
Every wednesday and thursday, there is a farmer's market in San Isidro. It’s one of the largest in the area, and you can find fresh fruits, vegetables, homemade goods, and even crafts here.

Playa Dominical
About 45 minutes away, this laid-back beach town is famous for its surfing and bohemian vibe. It’s a great spot for a day trip or weekend getaway. Public bus transportation is available for only 5 USD.

Cloud Forests of San Gerardo de Dota
This cute village is perfect for birdwatching, especially if you want to spot the elusive resplendent quetzal bird. This town is located 1,5 hours away from San Isidro.
San Isidro’s central market
The central market is one of the best places to experience the local culture. Walk around the “Sodas” (small restaurants) where you can try traditional snacks like chorreadas or handmade corn tortillas or “casados” for a very affordable price.
Living in San Isidro gives you an opportunity to slow down, embrace nature, and enjoy life to the fullest. From sipping coffee at a local café to hiking through lush landscapes, every moment here is a chance to connect with Costa Rica’s unique culture.
